Alachua, FL (January 4, 2019) - A horrific crash between Alachua and Gainesville left seven people dead on Thursday, January 3rd. The crash took place on Interstate 75 around 3:30 pm.
The crash happened when two tractor-trailers, a passenger van, and a sedan were all involved in a crash near mile marker 393 at Northwest 39th Avenue. According to Lieutenant Patrick Riordan of the Florida Highway Patrol, five of the deceased victims were in the passenger van and another was in one of the tractor-trailers. Authorities have not released any details on exactly how the crash occurred. Large plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from the crash site.
The Alachua County Sheriff's Office and Alachua County Fire Rescue assisted the FHP with the investigation. None of the deceased victims were immediately identified. The roadway is expected to remain closed into Friday and drivers are asked to find alternate routes.
