Charlotte County, FL (September 12, 2018) - A scooter driver suffered critical injuries in a crash on Tuesday, September 12th. The collision happened in the nighttime hours on US 41 near Hancock Avenue.
Initial details from the crash are limited. However, we do know that 68 year old Luis Benitez Hidalgo has been identified as the scooter driver. Hidalgo was traveling on US 41 when he was struck by a passing vehicle. He suffered critical, life-threatening injuries in the crash and was rushed to Lee Memorial Hospital.
US 41 was shut down for investigation following the accident. There is no information on the identity of the driver or how the crash occurred at this time. There is also no indication on whether the driver remained at the scene to cooperate with officers. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
A reportable crash occurs approximately every 90 seconds in Florida. Many crashes are caused by drivers who fail to follow traffic laws. In this case, no additional details have been released regarding the cause of the accident.
