Debary, FL (September 5, 2018) - A 17 year old was seriously hurt after exiting a school bus on Tuesday. According to reports by the Florida Highway Patrol, the 17 year old was exiting the bus on DeBary Avenue near Conventry Estates Boulevard around 3:30 am. As she walked across the traffic, a vehicle came along and hit her.
Paramedics rushed to the scene and the girl was transported to a local hospital. She reportedly has serious injuries but there is no word on whether the injuries are considered life-threatening. The driver, 59 year old Angel Berrios Santiago, was uninjured in the collision. The school bus had flashing lights activated at the time, but FHP Lt. Kim Montes said the driver was not required to stop because the car was on the other side of a divided roadway at the time.
FHP continues to investigate and there is no word on whether the driver will face any charges.
School bus safety has become a very serious topic of discussion in recent years. There are about 130 school-related vehicle crash fatalities reported annually. Of course, there are many more crashes involving injuries as well. Many states have laws which require drivers to stop for school buses that are loading or unloading children and to come to a complete stop when a bus activates it red stop lights and stop arms.
In this incident, things appear more complicated because the driver did not technically violate the school bus traffic law. However, a full investigation is needed to determine if the driver was otherwise negligent and could have taken reasonable measures to avoid a collision with the 17 year old girl. If it turns out that the driver was negligent in any way, then he will be held legally responsible for the damages resulting from the crash.
