DeLand, FL (March 16, 2021) - Two women from Apopka were killed in a three-car crash in Volusia County on Tuesday. The accident occurred around 7:10 a.m. on New York Avenue near DeLand Crossings Boulevard.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 27-year-old woman from Apopka was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla eastbound on New York Avenue when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle traveled into the westbound lane and collided head-on with a van. A Nissan Versa then struck the side of the van. The Corolla driver, along with a 20-year-old passenger, died at the accident scene. The driver of the van suffered minor injuries while the Versa driver was not hurt. No one involved in the wreck has been identified. The westbound lanes of the roadway were closed for several hours as motorists were urged to find alternate routes of travel and to avoid the scene if possible.
An investigation is ongoing. There is no additional information available.
Fatal car accidents in Florida take place about once every three hours. According to statistics released by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, there were more than 3,100 fatal crashes reported in our state in 2019. This number has risen steadily over the past several years as Florida is becoming an increasingly dangerous place for motorists.
