The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrived at the scene shortly after the incident took place. According to deputies, a 2007 Chevrolet was traveling southbound on Smith Sundy Road around 2:50 a.m. For reasons unknown, the driver lost control of the car, causing it to veer off of the roadway. The vehicle struck an embankment and rolled over before coming to rest in a drainage canal. One passenger was able to escape the vehicle along with the driver. However, another passenger, later identified as Miguel Angiel Hernandez, was trapped inside the car. He was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Delray Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Police are looking into the accident and charges are pending against the driver at this time.
This year in Florida, there will be approximately 400,000 reportable crashes. Well over half of these crashes will involve injuries and some will also be fatal. Unfortunately, serious and fatal accidents take place on Florida's roadways multiple times per day. Negligent driving plays a major role in many serious accidents. While the cause of each crash varies, police will undertake a thorough investigation in order to determine how the crash occurred.
Our thoughts and condolences are with the family Miguel Angiel Hernandez during this difficult time.
