Fort Myers, FL (October 12, 2018) - Police in Fort Myers are looking for answers following a second shooting in two days at nearby shopping centers. The shooting in question occurred on Wednesday, October 10th at the Sungold Plaza strip mall.
Police say that 41 year old Torre Deontray Fulcher and 43 year old William Allen Merrill III were gunned down by a rifle inside the strip mall on Wednesday night. Fulcher died shortly after the shooting while Merrill died on Thursday morning. Police have not made any arrests and are currently searching for the suspect or suspects in the shooting.
This shooting came on the heels of a shooting on Tuesday evening at the Bell Tower Shops, an outdoor mall located approximately 6 miles from the Sungold Plaza strip mall. In that case, a woman was shot and she remains hospitalized at this time.
Police do not believe that the two incidents are connected to each other.
Our condolences go out to the victims who lost their lives in this senseless tragedy. Shopping malls and other public places are legally responsible to some extent for the safety and security of their patrons. Places such as malls, movie theaters, stadiums and other places where people gather will typically provide security in an effort to avoid situations such as these. In cases where adequate security could have prevented a tragedy, a victim or their family may bring a negligent security claim against the organization or business responsible for providing security.
