According to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, a call came in for assistance at 7:47 am. The call was in reference to an injured pedestrian. Upon arrival, officials discovered one man suffering from critical injuries. The man was later pronounced dead. Further investigation revealed that the deceased was working on a roadway construction project when he was hit and killed. The man has not been identified pending notification of next of kin.
Early investigation reveals that a vehicle was traveling westbound on Hawthorne when the driver lost control and crossed over the media, striking the worker and another car.

Fatal crashes occur in Florida approximately every three hours. By nature, construction workers have a very dangerous job. There are many risks associated with being around heavy equipment as well as working on the road in a busy area.
However, the presence of risk does not mean that a worker should be responsible when they are injured or killed due to someone else's negligence. When an accident such as this one takes place, the worker's family may consider a wrongful death lawsuit. In Florida, a wrongful death case can be filed by a surviving family member against the person whose negligence lead to the victim's death. Only time will tell if this next step occurs.
