Hillsborough County, FL (April 15, 2019) - A motorcyclist from Tampa is dead and his passenger was seriously hurt in a crash that took place on Dale Mabry Highway on Sunday, April 14th.
Police say that 49-year-old Michael S. Tapp was driving a 2016 motorcycle in the northbound lanes of Dale Mabry when a vehicle turned in front of him at an intersection. Tapp slammed on his brakes to avoid a crash with the vehicle and lost control of his motorcycle in the process. The bike overturned and both Tapp and his passenger, Kymberle A. Meade, 46, were thrown into the roadway. Tapp was rushed to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Meade suffered critical injuries and was also taken to St. Joseph's for treatment.
Police are looking for a light-colored pickup truck in connection with the crash. The truck was last seen traveling eastbound on Idlewild Avenue. Anyone with information is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 813-558-1800.
Our condolences go out to the family of Michael S. Tapp in this tragic Hillsborough County motorcycle accident. Unfortunately, deaths from motorcycle crashes are common across our state. Over 14% of all traffic fatalities take place in motorcycles. This is despite the fact that just 3% of all registered vehicles are motorcycles.
