Hillsborough County, FL (August 29, 2019) - A deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office struck and killed a pedestrian on Tuesday, August 27th. The crash took place around 6:00 a.m. in the 800 block of Wheeler Road.
According to reports, 39-year-old Justin Rhodes was traveling on Wheeler when he struck the pedestrian. Following the crash, Rhodes got out of his vehicle to assess the damage. He called dispatchers and reported that he saw garbage cans knocked over but no sign of property damage. Rhodes then got into his vehicle and drove away. Shortly after, another person called 911 and reported that a man was lying in the roadway in the same location. When authorities arrived, they located a 54-year-old male pedestrian. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. It was determined that the man was standing near the garbage cans when he was struck.
No charges have been filed at this time, however, an investigation into the crash is ongoing. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released.
