Jackson County, FL (September 15, 2018) - Three children sustained injuries in a car accident on Friday, September 15th. At 3:27 pm, Florida Highway Patrol was dispatched to a crash at State Road 69. Upon arrival, they discovered that the crash involved a single vehicle driven by 32 year old Robert Harris.
After investigation, officers learned that Harris's vehicle veered off the roadway and onto the shoulder. As he attempted to travel back into the roadway, he crossed over the center line and onto the opposite shoulder. Harris then overcorrected the vehicle and it overturned, resulting in injuries to himself and three children in his vehicle.
A 1 year old and an 8 year old in the vehicle sustained serious injuries, while a 10 year old suffered minor injuries. Harris also suffered minor injuries. None of the children in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. Harris was arrested and charged with reckless driving along with child endangerment. It is not clear how or if the children involved were related to Robert Harris.
The facts as alleged in this accident are extremely troubling. Certainly, it is irresponsible to travel with children in a vehicle and not ensure that they are wearing seatbelts and are properly restrained. Every driver transporting children has a duty to ensure that the children are restrained and safe inside the vehicle. The failure to live up to this duty is certainly considered a negligent act that rises to the level of a criminal charge. The driver will also face potential civil liability for the injuries suffered by the children in his vehicle.
