Jacksonville, FL (September 11, 2018) - A motorcyclist lost his life in a Sunday evening crash in Jacksonville. Police were called to the intersection of Lem Turner Road and Broom Street around 7:30 pm in reference to a motorcycle vs. vehicle crash.
When deputies with the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office arrived, they discovered the motorcyclist suffering from critical injuries. Further investigation revealed that the motorcycle was traveling south on Lem Turner Road when it collided with a four door vehicle. There were two passengers inside the car at the time of the collision. Medical treatment was provided but the motorcyclist passed away from his injuries at the scene. The deceased victim has not been identified at this time. There is no word on whether anyone else was hurt in the crash.
Detectives with the traffic homicide unit were assigned to investigate the accident. There is no information at this time on how the crash occurred or whether authorities expect to issue charges.
More than 5,000 people died in motorcycle crashes in 2015. From 2014 to 2015, the number of motorcycle crash fatalities increased by 8%. Florida is near the top of all states in the country in motorcycle fatality rates.
All of these statistics tell us that motorcycle riders face great risk each time they get on the road. Certain precautions should always be taken, including wearing a helmet, operating the motorcycle safely and in compliance with all traffic laws. However, not all motorcycle crashes are preventable. A motorcycle crash may be completely outside the control of the rider.
