Key Biscayne, FL (November 5, 2019) - The victim of a fatal crash on the Rickenbacker Causeway in Key Biscayne has been identified. The crash originally took place on Saturday, November 2nd around 8:00 p.m.
Officials report that Jessica Fuentes was leaving work and headed home along the Causeway when she rear-ended by another vehicle. Following the crash, the vehicle veered across the road and struck a chain-link fence. After the car struck the fence, a fence post crashed through the vehicle and impaled the driver, identified as Paula Curra Rafetti. Rafettis' car then flipped over several times before coming to rest. She was airlifted to the hospital and later died while doctors performed surgery. Her husband, Diego Rafetti, was in the car when the crash occurred. Diego received non-life-threatening injuries.
Fuentes was later arrested by police and charged with DUI. She was taken to jail and held on a $75,000 bond.
Our deepest thoughts and sympathies go out to the family and friends of Paula Rafetti in the aftermath of this fatal crash in Key Biscayne. Unfortunately, it appears as though alcohol played a role in this collision. Each year in Florida, alcohol continues to be responsible for the cause of hundreds of traffic fatalities and thousands of injuries. Impaired drivers pose a great danger to themselves and other motorists as their reaction time is often slowed and the chances of deadly crashes are exponentially increased.
