LaBelle, FL (October 7, 2018) - A suspected impaired driver caused a three-car collision in LaBelle on Saturday, October 6th.
Police report that 32-year-old Ascencion Rodriguez was driving a Kia Optima on SR 29 around 9:25 pm. Rodriguez was traveling directly behind a Toyota Sequoia driven by 32-year-old Yamayri Gomez. Rodriguez rear-ended the Toyota Sequoia before losing control of his vehicle and crossing the centerline of SR 29. His vehicle then struck a third vehicle traveling southbound.
An infant passenger in Rodriguez's vehicle suffered minor injuries. Rodriguez was seriously injured and transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. An 11-month-old passenger in the Sequoia was ejected in the crash and was transported to Tampa General Hospital. The 11-month-old is listed in serious but stable condition. One of the passengers in the third vehicle was also transported to Hendry Regional Hospital with injuries.
The crash remains under investigation at this time. Rodriguez was suspected to be under the influence of alcohol by troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol. He was also not wearing a seat belt when the crash occurred.
In 2016, there were over 5,000 confirmed DUI-related fatal crashes. In addition, there were many more DUI crashes that were not fatal but involved injuries to one or more people.
