Lake Wales, FL (May 7, 2019) - A 59-year-old bicyclist is dead after he was hit by a hit-and-run driver on Monday, May 6th in Polk County. According to a spokesperson from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the crash took place around 5:00 a.m. at the intersection of Washington Avenue and US-27.
Deputies have identified the deceased bicyclist as Ramond Johnson, of Lake Wales. Johnson was found on the shoulder of the roadway near the sidewalk. He had been struck by a vehicle and thrown from his bike. Following the crash, the vehicle fled the scene and officials are still looking for the driver. Police believe that Johnson was riding westbound when he was hit by the vehicle traveling northbound.
Although police do not have a suspect at this time, part of the incident was captured on video surveillance. Officers are now looking for a full-sized sedan in connection with the crash. No further details have been made available at this time.
