Largo, FL (July 8, 2021) - One person is dead following a crash that took place in Largo on Thursday, July 8th. The collision took place just before 6:00 p.m. on Walsingham Road near 137th Street North.
Police say that a Jeep Wrangler was traveling on Walsingham when the driver ran a red light and collided with a southbound Toyota Prius. The female Prius driver was rushed to a local hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries. Her identity has not been revealed at this time. Following an investigation, police determined that the driver of the Wrangler was impaired. The driver was charged with vehicular homicide and DUI manslaughter for his role in the accident. He has not been identified at his time.
The road was closed for about five hours while officers worked at the scene. No further information is available.
According to statistics, there are more than 5,000 alcohol-related crashes reported annually in Florida. On average, more than 400 people are killed in Florida DUI crashes. The proportion of victims who are injured or killed in crashes involving impaired drivers is far greater than those same numbers in crashes where drugs and alcohol are not a factor. DUI drivers pose a great risk of danger for all other motorists on the roadway.
