Lee County, FL (April 2, 2021) - The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a fatal crash involving a bicyclist on Friday in Lee County. The crash took place around 1:55 p.m. on McGregor Road near the intersection with Old McGregor Boulevard.
According to troopers, a Fort Myers man was riding his bicycle on Old McGregor and attempting to cross the road when he was hit by an 85-year-old man coming around a curve. The cyclist was taken to Healthpark Hospital where he died from his injuries. His identity has not been released at this time. There were no additional injuries reported.
The crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available.
While not as common as other types of crashes, bicycle accidents in Florida result in approximately 100 fatalities each year. Bicycles can present many dangers, especially when riders are involved in an accident with a vehicle as the bicycle offers no protection from the force and impact of the crash.
Our most sincere condolences are with the family who lost their loved one in this Lee County bicycle accident.
