New Smyrna Beach, FL (July 25, 2019) - Police responded to the scene of a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a scooter on State Road 44. The crash took place on Tuesday, July 23rd, around 11:00 p.m.
According to the New Smyrna Beach Police Department, 28-year-old Gelisha De Chelle Smith was riding a scooter on SR 44 when she was hit from behind by another vehicle. The vehicle fled the scene after the crash. Video obtained from a nearby business appears to show a semi-trailer striking Smith before fleeing. The trailer continued traveling eastbound after the accident.
The video did not show any identifying marks on the truck. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-277-TIPS.
