Florida has one of the largest populations of people who ride bicycles. Overall, bicycle accidents account for just 2% of all traffic fatalities. In 2014, around 726 people died in fatal bicycle accidents.
New Tampa, FL (June 25, 2018) – Police are saying that a man intentionally struck a family on a New Tampa bike path, killing a father and injuring his children. Police arrested the man responsible for the accident.
42-year-old Pedro Aguerreberry was riding his bicycle on a trail with his two sons when a car suddenly veered onto the grass and the bike trail. It struck him, his 3-year-old, and 8-year-old sons. The 3-year-old had to be airlifted with injuries and the 8-year-old only had minor injuries. The children are still recovering from their injuries but they are expected to be okay.
Police arrested a 30-year-old responsible for the accident identified as Mikese Morse. Morse fled the scene in the hit-and-run. He was charged with murder in the first degree, leaving the scene of an accident with death, and more.
The accident took place when Morse made a U-turn and then proceeded to purposely drive onto the sidewalk, running over Aguerreberry and his sons. Morse still did not give an explanation as to why he did it, and it just appears to be random. By Sunday, police had located the driver responsible.
According to investigators, Morse claimed that he was going to kill somebody hours before the attack took place.
At this time, Tampa Police are still investigating the crash.
