North Fort Myers, FL (February 10, 2019) - A two-car crash in North Fort Myers resulted in the deaths of two people on Saturday, February 9th. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to State Road 31 at Fox Hill Road sometime before 3:00 pm.
When troopers arrived on scene, they began an investigation into the crash. According to reports, Rita Jo Matz, 67, was traveling northbound on SR 31 when she went into the southbound lanes in an attempt to pass another vehicle. Matz overcorrected her vehicle several times before it eventually ended up directly in the path of an oncoming Ford F-150. Matz's vehicle collided with the F-150 in a nearly head-on fashion. Also in Matz's vehicle at the time were Barbara S. Gates, 73, and Mabel R. Hawkins, 66, both from Illinois.
Matz and Gates were killed from the impact of the crash. Hawkins suffered serious injuries and was transported via ambulance to Lee Memorial Hospital. There is no word on whether the truck driver was hurt. All lanes of SR 31 remained closed for an extended period while police and rescue workers were on scene.
The accident remains under investigation.
