North Reddington Beach, FL (January 27, 2019) - A man visiting from Great Britain died after being struck by a vehicle in North Reddington Beach on Friday, January 25th. The accident took place just after 11:00 pm on Gulf Boulevard, near the DoubleTree Resort.
Police say that Roger P. Galvin, 61, attempted to cross Gulf Boulevard from west to east. He was not in a crosswalk at the time he attempted to cross. As he was walking across the roadway, he was struck by a 2015 Dodge Dart driven by 35-year-old Alex Lyons. Galvin suffered life-threatening injuries and was rushed to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. He died a short time later.
Police are still investigating the crash but have said that neither impairment nor speed played a role. There is no word on whether any charges will be issued.
Our condolences go out to the family of Roger P. Galvin in this tragic pedestrian accident. Pedestrian crashes claim the lives of two people per day, on average, across our state. Three-fourths of all pedestrian accidents will involve injuries serious enough to require hospitalization and over 20% of traffic accident deaths are attributed to pedestrian fatalities.
It is clear that a pedestrian crash can have serious long-term and even irreversible consequences. It is important, therefore, for both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert for one another. Pedestrians should cross the street in crosswalks and marked areas and should wear reflective clothing when walking at night and in poorly-lit areas. Drivers must always be on the lookout for pedestrians and should exercise caution in areas where pedestrians are likely to be found.
