Orange Park, FL (September 7, 2021) - One man was killed in a motorcycle accident that took place in Orange Park on Sunday morning. The crash happened on Bartlett Avenue at the intersection with Debarry Avenue.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene. According to troopers, a Harley-Davidson was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection. At the same time, a Volkswagen came up behind the motorcycle. The Volkswagen failed to stop and crashed into the rear of the motorcycle. Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the motorcyclist to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. He has not been identified at this time.
Following an investigation, troopers identified the Volkswagen driver as 39-year-old Carlos McCarter. According to a report, McCarter had slurred speech and an odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath. There is no word on specific charges at this time. No further information is available.
Impaired driving continues to play a major role in serious and fatal Florida car accidents. In 2018, there were 3,133 fatalities reported on Florida's roadways. From the number, 814 of the deaths occurred in impaired driving crashes. In 2017, the numbers were similar with 841 of 3,116 deaths attributed to impaired driving. Sadly, the victims of these crashes are most often innocent bystanders who are in the wrong place at the wrong time and are killed due to the reckless actions of another person.
