Palm Bay, FL (February 1, 2021) - A 17-year-old girl from Merritt Island is dead and two others are seriously hurt following a collision on I-95 in Palm Bay. The crash happened just north of the Palm Bay Road exit around 10:00 a.m.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2014 Kia Optima was traveling at a high rate of speed when the 20-year-old driver lost control of the car and collided with a van. The Optima then traveled off the roadway and collided with several trees. The 17-year-old girl was a passenger in the Optima. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Another 17-year-old passenger and the driver both suffered serious injuries in the crash and were taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne. There is no word on whether anyone in the van was injured.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing at this time. There is no further information available.
Fatal car accidents in Florida take place about once every three hours. Sadly, more than 3,000 people were killed in these crashes and many of them were innocent passengers and drivers.
