Port Richey, FL (April 30, 2019) - Four bicyclists were injured after a wheelchair liftgate flew open and struck them on Monday, April 29th. The crash took place on Ridge Road, near US-19.
The Port Richey Police Department responded to a call regarding the crash. According to initial reports, the 18-wheeler was carrying medical equipment and the liftgate was not properly secured. The gate flew open and struck the four bicyclists riding behind the truck. All four were rushed to area hospitals, where two underwent emergency surgery.
The driver told officers he did not know that the gate had opened and continued driving down the road. At this time, the injured victims have not been identified. No additional details are available.
