Punta Gorda, FL (November 21, 2018) - Three semi-trucks collided with one another in Punta Gorda on Tuesday, November 20th. The crash took place on County Road 74, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Troopers say that weather conditions were foggy when Sthenio Syvrain, 44, attempted to pass 28-year-old Roynel Zequeira. Both vehicles were traveling eastbound on CR 74 at the time. Syvrain moved into the westbound lane to pass Zequeira but collided with another semi-truck traveling in the opposite direction. The driver of the westbound truck sustained critical injuries and died from the collision. His name has not been released at this time pending family notification.
Syvrain's vehicle jackknifed following the crash and came to a stop, blocking both lanes of travel. Syvrain suffered critical injuries. Zequier was not hurt. County Road 74 remained closed for several hours while police investigated the incident.
Fatal vehicle accidents are reported about once every 3 hours in Florida. Semi-trucks are some of the most dangerous vehicles on the road and have the potential to cause serious damage and destruction when they are involved in a crash. Our thoughts are with those affected by this horrific crash in Punta Gorda.
Many fatal accidents are avoidable by drivers following basic traffic laws. All maneuvers on the roadway, including turning, passing and merging into traffic should always be done with care and caution. A simple mistake can have tragic and irreversible consequences.
