Sarasota, FL (May 29, 2021) - A 52-year-old man is dead following a bicycle crash on Friday night in Sarasota. The accident took place at approximately 10:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 41 near Spanish Lakes Boulevard.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the crash scene. According to a report from troopers, the bicyclist attempted to cross the highway when he was struck by a vehicle. The bicycle was pushed off of the roadway following the collision. The bicyclist, who was not identified, died at the crash scene. The 32-year-old male driver was not hurt in the accident. There were no other vehicles involved.
Police are investigating the accident at this time. No further information is available.
While not as common as crashes involving cars, Florida does experience thousands of bicycle crashes each year. A number of these crashes, approximately 100, will, unfortunately, end up being fatal for the bicyclist. Bicycle riders are at great risk of death or serious injury when they are struck by vehicles as bicycles offer very little protection from the tremendous force of a car accident.
We wish to extend our condolences to the family of the bicyclist following this fatal crash in Sarasota.
