Sarasota, FL (February 4, 2019) - A fatal accident involving a car and a bicycle was reported on Sunday, February 3rd in Sarasota. According to reports, the accident happened around 1:00 am in the northbound lanes of US 41.
The Sarasota Police Department was called to the crash scene. Upon arrival, officers located a bicyclist who had been struck by a vehicle. Two people inside the vehicle also suffered injuries, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Florida ranks first nationally in the number of bicycle fatalities, with approximately 5.7 fatalities reported per one million people. The dangers of riding a bicycle cannot be understated. While many people enjoy bicycle riding as a hobby or for exercise, the fact is that bicyclists are at a greater risk than occupants of traditional motor vehicles of being involved in a serious or fatal crash. Many serious crashes involving bicycles happen late at night or in the evening hours when lighting and visibility are worse than during the day.
