43-year-old Shawn Smith, a competitive mountain bike racer, was killed in Northwest Alachua County in an unfortunate accident.
The accident took place around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening when Smith was cycling and was suddenly struck by a pickup truck. He was taken to Shands and died on Thursday afternoon due to serious injuries. The family started a GoFundMe to receive help with outstanding medical bills. Right now, state troopers are investigating the accident to determine if the driver should be charged.
