St. Petersburg, FL (April 25, 2021) - A 29-year-old man died in a motorcycle accident that took place in St. Petersburg on Saturday, April 24th. The incident occurred around 11:20 p.m along the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
According to a report from police, 57-year-old Wilbur French was traveling westbound on the Causeway when he tried to make a left turn. French turned in front of a motorcycle driven by 29-year-old Edward Jimenez. There were cones in place at the time preventing left turns in the area. Jimenez was critically injured in the accident and was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Following an investigation, police learned that French had surgery earlier in the day and had left the hospital against medical advice. He also told police that he had smoked crack prior to the collision. Police charged him with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide as a result of the investigation. He is currently being held in the Pinellas County Jail.
No additional information has been released.
In 2017, 5,125 impaired driving crashes were reported in Florida. From this number, 350 deaths were recorded. A year prior, more than 400 people were killed in impaired driving collisions in our state.
