Each year, over 10,000 pedestrians are hurt in traffic-related incidents. Crossing the road is one of the most dangerous and vulnerable times for a pedestrian. Pedestrians crossing the road must make sure that they are clear of all oncoming traffic and that they have carefully observed the scene before attempting to cross. If possible, a pedestrian should use a crosswalk or other marked area where available.
Similarly, drivers, must always be aware of pedestrians at intersections, even if no crosswalk is present. Drivers have a legal duty to drive safely and to ensure that they are not negligent. When a driver's negligence results in injuries to a pedestrian, the driver can be held civilly responsible for the losses sustained by the pedestrian.
