St. Petersburg, FL (April 25, 2021) - The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene of a fatal accident on Saturday, April 24th. The collision occurred around 3:30 p.m. along Gandy Boulevard near Oak Street NE.
According to troopers, an SUV was traveling eastbound along Gandy Boulevard. At the same time, a 22-year-old man was driving a sedan westbound on Gandy. There were three passengers in the sedan, a 22-year-old woman, a 47-year-old man, a 14-day old infant. The SUV suffered a mechanical failure when its left front tire separated from the vehicle. The driver lost control and traveled into the path of the sedan. The infant and the 47-year-old man in the sedan were thrown from the vehicle.
The 47-year-old man died at the accident scene while the infant, who was restrained in a car seat, sustained minor injuries. Both 22-year-old occupants of the sedan also suffered minor injuries. The driver of the SUV was not injured. No one involved in the accident has been identified at this time.

Fatal car accidents in Florida take place about eight times per day. In 2019, more than 3,000 people tragically lost their lives on our roadways. Many of these victims were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and were not at fault for the collision. Each accident must be carefully investigated by police in order to determine who should be held responsible.
