Sumter County, FL (December 4, 2018) - A mother and a 2-month-old child were killed in a head-on crash that took place on US 301 on Sunday, December 2nd.
Florida Highway Patrol reports that 24-year-old Cassandra French was traveling southbound on 301 in a 1998 Ford Expedition. For unknown reasons, French's vehicle veered off the roadway and onto the shoulder. French attempted to maneuver her vehicle back onto the road but she overcorrected and veered into an oncoming travel lane. While in the northbound lane, the Expedition collided head-on with a 2016 BMV driven by 34-year-old Melissa Tobey.
French died at the scene of the crash. Her 2-month-old son sustained critical injuries and died a day later at St. Joseph's Hospital. Tobey was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.
Troopers say everyone involved was wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash. There is no further information available.
A fatal crash is reported about every three hours in Florida. We are saddened to hear of this fatal and extremely tragic crash in Sumter County that took the life of a mother and her young child.

In this crash, it remains to be seen why Cassandra French initially lost control of her vehicle. An investigation will be conducted by police and an accident reconstruction will likely take place and hopefully provide more answers.
