Tampa, FL (July 3, 2021) - A man is dead after a pedestrian crash near Tampa on Saturday morning. The incident occurred just before 3:00 a.m. on U.S. Highway 41 South near Palm River Road.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the accident scene. According to a report from troopers, a 66-year-old man from Polk City was driving a semitrailer northbound on U.S. 41 when he struck a pedestrian that was crossing the road. The pedestrian, who was not immediately identified, died at the crash scene. There were no other injuries reported.
Troopers have not released any further information at this time. An investigation is ongoing.
More than 75% of all Florida pedestrian crashes result in injuries to the victim. Injuries and fatalities are far more common in pedestrian accidents when compared with other types of crashes. This is because pedestrians have no protection from the force and impact of the collision. Often, drivers fail to see the pedestrian until it is too late, thus resulting in a high-speed collision.
Our thoughts and condolences are with the victim's family following this tragic fatal pedestrian accident in Tampa.
