Winter Haven, FL (July 8, 2019) - Police are investigating after a fatal two-car crash in Winter Haven on Sunday, July 7th. The accident occurred on Cypress Gardens Boulevard, just west of Highway 27.
According to deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, 22-year-old Nannette Cruz Garcia was traveling eastbound in a 2003 Toyota Corolla when she crossed over the median and collided head-on with a 2007 PT Cruiser that was traveling westbound. The PT Cruiser's driver has been identified as a 15-year-old boy who was legally driving with a learner's permit at the time of the crash. The Cruiser was also occupied by the boy's 7-year-old sister and 57-year-old father, who has been identified as Sandeep Kumar Beri.
Beri was taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The 15-year-old and 7-year-old are also in stable condition at local hospitals. Garcia was taken to Lakeland Regional, where she is listed in critical condition.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing and it is unknown at this time what caused Garcia to cross over the median.
