Zephyrhills, FL (November 27, 2019) - One person was killed and another was injured in a crash that took place in Zephyrhills on Tuesday, November 26th. The crash occurred on County Road 579 around 9:50 a.m.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene near State Road 56. According to reports, a Chevrolet pickup was traveling southbound on CR 579 when it came to the intersection of SR 56. The pickup attempted to turn left onto SR 56 at a flashing signal when it collided with a Hyundai that was traveling northbound. The pickup struck the left side of the Hyundai as it was making the turn. Two women in the Hyundai were taken to the hospital. A passenger, 82-year-old Verla M. Martinek, died as a result of injuries she sustained. The driver, a 56-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries.
Troopers are still investigating. The driver of the pickup, a 27-year-old woman from Wesley Chapel, has minor injuries. Charges are pending against her at this time according to the FHP.
We are saddened to hear of this tragic fatal crash in Zephyrhills. Each day, about eight deadly crashes will take place in Florida. Unfortunately, this also means that innocent lives will be lost when these crashes do occur. Many victims of fatal crashes are killed due to the negligence of other drivers, including failing to yield the right-of-way or failing to operate their vehicle safely under the conditions.
