According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the boy was riding his bicycle southbound on Allen Road when he was hit by a Ford Mustang that was traveling southbound. The crash occurred as the driver failed to maintain his lane. The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and died at the accident scene. Following an investigation, it was revealed that the driver was impaired in excess of three times the legal limit. Police have identified the driver as Andrea Nadine Woods. Woods was later arrested for DUI manslaughter and taken to the Paso County Jail.
No further information has been released at this time.
In 2017, Florida experienced 5,125 alcohol-related crashes. This number equates to about 14 crashes per day in which drivers are drinking or under the influence of alcohol or some other substance. Of the number of crashes, about 350 fatalities were reported and many more victims suffered injuries. Drunk driving crashes in Florida are almost always caused by the negligence of the impaired driver. Being impaired slows reaction time and diminishes the capability of drivers to appreciate the risks of driving.
We wish to offer our thoughts and condolences to the victim's family following this tragic fatal crash in Zephyrhills.
