5 Bicycle Safety Tips for the Whole Family

With year round sunshine in Florida many residents and visitors ride bicycles as a mode of transportation and enjoy cycling for recreation and fitness. This increase in use means more bike-related accidents. Follow these bicycle safety tips as an additional source of precaution—remember, it's always a good idea to take every safety measure possible!

1. Check brakes, chains and air in tires before heading out.

2. Use designated bike lanes. Opt for roads that feature bike paths and less traffic.

3. Both children and adults should wear a helmet. Check the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (BHSI) for suggestions on choosing appropriate helmet sizes.

4. Use reflectors for night-time riding—on bicycles and gear.

5. Be wary of parked cars' door zones. Don't rely on motorists seeing you—just because you see a car doesn't mean the driver sees you.

7. Stay focused. Avoid distractions such as cell phones or music while riding.

According to the NHTSA, Florida is the most dangerous state for cyclists. By law, cars must allow 3 feet of space when passing a bicycle, however many drivers are unaware or fail to obey this law which leads to serious and sometimes deadly accidents.

Even when taking every precaution, you may still find yourself the victim of a bicycle accident due to an inattentive driver who:

  • Exits a driveway without looking
  • Turns without looking
  • Fails to obey traffic signs
  • Fails to yield the right-of-way
  • Impaired or distracted
